2012
In the early 2010s, as chat apps gradually begin to replace SMS as the de facto standard of mobile communication, three young Swiss developers create a secure alternative called “End-to-End Encrypted Messaging Application,” or “EEEMA” for short. The first version is released on December 12 in Apple’s App Store under the name “Threema,” followed shortly thereafter by the Android version. The app has caught the spirit of the age: the number of users quickly grows to 250,000.
2013
In 2013, Snowden’s revelations expose the extent of global surveillance, prompting millions of people to question the digital communication channels they have been using. As a secure, independent alternative from Switzerland, Threema benefits from growing interest and increasing demand.
2014
Facebook (now Meta) buys WhatsApp, causing a significant loss of trust. Threema’s user base expands to two million within a few weeks. In spring of 2014, Threema GmbH is officially founded to drive forward the professional expansion of the app and ensure its long-term viability.
2015
With Threema Gateway, companies can send messages automatically via Threema. The new API opens up many possible use cases in professional IT and communication systems.
2016
Threema Work is a messenger app designed specifically for use in companies. It combines user-friendliness with high data protection standards. Especially in the context of growing regulatory requirements, Threema Work is becoming the secure choice for many companies.
2017
Threema Web makes it possible to chat on a desktop computer. In addition, encrypted calls are now possible without having to disclose your own phone number.
2018
Since the introduction of the GDPR, European companies are no longer allowed to use everyday messengers for business purposes. As a privacy-compliant solution, Threema Work is therefore becoming increasingly important. In addition, Threema Broadcast for one-to-many communication and the company’s own backup solution, Threema Safe, are being introduced.
2019
An independent security audit by the University of Münster’s Lab for IT Security certifies that the Threema app for Android and iOS and the backup solution Threema Safe offer a high level of security. The auditors confirm that data protection and technology have been implemented in an exemplary manner.
2020
By partnering with the investment company Afinum, the foundation for long-term stability and accelerated product development is laid. At the same time, the company responds to the pandemic situation and adds secure, encrypted video calls to the app.
2021
The new WhatsApp terms and conditions lead to a mass switch to Threema, and the number of users exceeds the ten million mark. In addition, the company launches its own desktop app, which allows users to chat securely on their computers independently of their browser.
2022
On December 12, Threema celebrates its tenth anniversary. Threema Libre, a completely Google-free Android version, is released via F-Droid. In addition, the modern communication protocol “Ibex” is introduced, which lays the technical foundation for group calls and multi-device functionality.
2023
Threema now offers end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls in groups. At the same time, the public beta phase of the new desktop app with multi-device support begins: iOS users can now chat securely and independently of their smartphone.
2024
After twelve years, the founders are handing over operational management to a new CEO with a focus on product development. In addition, Threema has been recognized as a market leader in secure communication solutions by the independent US research institute Forrester.
