World Press Freedom Day

In modern democracy, the press plays such an essential role that it is often described as the “Fourth Estate.” Without independent news coverage, and thus without the watchdog function of the press, political processes could not be reviewed by the public.

In their work, journalists often come into contact with whistleblowers and sources who provide highly sensitive information. This requires utmost confidentiality when it comes to the identity of such a source, and many choose to remain anonymous. Threema is an ideal tool in situations like this because all communication is end-to-end encrypted and the chat partners can remain anonymous (both with respect to each other and with respect to the service provider).

In light of this, the current efforts of various governments to undermine end-to-end encryption and/or to introduce compulsory identification must also be considered an attack on the freedom of the press. Together with other privacy-focused Internet services like Tutanota and Session, we appeal to democratic leaders not to weaken confidential communication and to continue to respect their citizens’ right to privacy:
